Sleeping under the stars for a cause: one night, big impact!

On Saturday, June 7th, more than 50 incredible people swapped their beds for cardboard and sleeping bags to take part in our 11th Annual Big Sleep Out raising awareness and funds for those experiencing homelessness across Somerset.

Hosted in Taunton, the Big Sleep Out isn’t about replicating the full hardship of homelessness, but about standing in solidarity with those without a home. It’s a powerful reminder of what many go through, and a heartfelt community effort to create change.

Despite the cold (and some very vocal seagulls!), spirits were high people of all ages came together, showing what community compassion really looks like.

Organiser Samantha Parr explains;

“We host this event to raise funds and awareness about homelessness in our local community. It's not meant to replicate the experience of homelessness, but to shine a light on the challenges many face and spark meaningful conversations. With Somerset recently reported as having the sixth highest number of rough sleepers of any local authority in 2023, events like this are more important than ever. ”

The event was made even more special thanks to the generous support of local businesses. Carpet Warehouse Taunton returned as our main sponsor, allowing us to promote the event more widely. RH Fibreboard donated all the cardboard for sleeping, and AC Security Southwest stayed up all night to ensure everyone’s safety.

We also enjoyed some proper comfort food: hearty stew and baked potatoes from Cooks Puddings and Bookers Taunton, a mountain of delicious cakes, and doughnuts from Warrens Bakery. And a huge thank you to Ben from Loafers, who rose bright and early to serve bacon sarnies at 7.00am to our sleepy sleepers!

As darkness fell, the evening came alive with music. We were lucky enough to be joined by five amazing local performers, Ben Manning, Ben from The Atomic Youth, Alice Keira Chard, Ryder Emcee, and Maya Yon, who all donated their time and talent. Ben Manning even wrote a song especially for the occasion, and Ryder Emcee shared new music from his upcoming album. Thank you also to The SPACE for years of support with sound and lighting.

This year, the event took on a lovely family-friendly atmosphere, with many younger participants getting involved. From painting hearts for the homeless in a craft session with Jill from DJP Woodcrafts, to a peaceful sunrise stretch yoga session with Amber Grace, there were moments of joy, creativity, and connection throughout the night.

When temperatures dipped, we were especially grateful for the cosy branded beanie hats donated by Tica Lilyy in Somerton—one of the most appreciated gifts of the night!

To everyone who took part, supported, or donated: you made a real difference. You gave up your comfort for one night to help change lives. Your compassion and commitment are making a realdifference for people experiencing homelessness here in Somerset.

Want to help? There is still time to donate here.
