Journey to Independence: How Targeted Support Is Changing Lives

Arc’s Targeted Support roles provide specialised, person-centred help for people with complex needs such as substance misuse, money management, mental health conditions, long-term illnesses, or a history of rough sleeping. The goal is simple but powerful: to help people transition into independent accommodation and sustain it long-term, promoting stability, confidence, and wellbeing.

Finding Strength to Move Forward

Our client, who wishes to remain anonymous but hopes to inspire others, had spent several years in supported accommodation. The journey hasn’t been easy; he has faced many challenges, including ongoing health issues. But with consistent encouragement and practical help from his support team, he was ready to take the next step.

When he became Gold banded on a flat, he was introduced to Emma Harrington, Arc’s Trauma Informed Lead. Together, they attended health appointments, learned how to budget, and saved for essential household items. When he received the keys, the flat was empty, but within just six weeks, it had been transformed into a comfortable, welcoming home.

He was connected to local support and grants, including furniture, a mobility scooter from the Village Agents, a cooker part-funded by the Taunton Aid in Sickness Fund, and new bedding donated by Besom. Every part of his new home was made possible by the connections Emma facilitated.

It’s nice to come and go as I please, I finally have a place I can call my own. All I needed was that encouragement to move forward when I could easily have gone backwards. I used to have an ‘I don’t care’ attitude and was hanging around with the wrong people, but Lauren and Emma at Arc have always supported me. Everything in my new home is there because of their help.”

The transition hasn’t been without challenges. At times life has felt lonely, and he has had to learn how to set boundaries and distance himself from negative influences. But these lessons have been an important part of his personal growth. He has embraced the change and continues to stay connected with positive, supportive people who help him stay on track.

Emma describes his progress as “remarkable,” saying: “He was always capable of living independently; he just needed a little push and the right support at the right time.”

Looking Ahead

Now, he is living independently and managing his home. He knows support is available if he needs it, but he is proud of how far he has come. Reflecting on his journey, he shared: “Everyone has a story, and I’ve learned that everyone has their reasons for what they do and the way they behave. I’ve come out the other side liking the person I’ve become.”

His story is a powerful reminder that with the right support, timing, and belief, lasting change is always possible.
