Our annual Big Sleep Out was due to take place in our car park on Friday 19th June, however, due to the current covid-19 situation, we have made the decision not to hold our Big Sleep Out in it's usual form. However, we are excited to announce our first ever virtual big sleep out! Taking place on the same date... but in the 'comfort' of your own outside spaces!
What is the Big Sleep Out?
The idea is for participants to sleep outside for just one night in order to raise valuable funds and awareness for the homeless. The funds raised go towards the support services Arc provides for the homeless in Somerset.
How does a virtual big sleep out work?
Participants will still sleep out but this time, you'll be sleeping out in your own outdoor space - a garden, shed, garage or even a den in your dining room if you don't have anywhere outside (see FAQs). Set up camp with sleeping bags, roll mats and a tent if you like. Once signed up, participants will receive instructions of how to join our live stream, where we will provide you with entertainment during the evening. We'll ask you to send photos of your set ups and check in with you the next morning to see how you got on! As normal, we'll be asking participants to collect sponsorship for their challenge, raising valuable funds for the homeless.
When and Where is the Big Sleep Out?
The virtual Big Sleep Out will be held on Friday 19th June and will begin at 7:30PM. We will check in the next morning around 7AM to see how you got on.
As the Big Sleep Out has now turned virtual, you'll be sleeping outside in your own gardens or other alternative space - get creative!
Who can take part?
Everyone! As long as your health allows you to safely sleep outside for the night. (Although there is option to stay inside too - see our FAQs).
You can do it alone, with your family or housemates - if you live together, you can sleep outside together! Why not encourage friends to do it from their gardens too and you can all share your experiences?
We hope that as well as this being a fundraiser for Arc, it can be an 'at home activity' for you all to enjoy too. It can also be a great learning experience for children and we have many take part each year.
How do I get involved?
We'd love for you to join us and signing up is simple! Download the registration form at the bottom of this page and return it to us. If it's easier for you, we are happy to email or post the forms to you - please just contact Rosie Hather on [email protected]
/ 01823 271326
Once you're registered, we'll send you further information, sponsorship forms and help you to set up a Just Giving page to raise those all important funds. It's never too early to start raising money!
Why are we still going ahead with the Big Sleep Out?
One option would of been to cancel the Big Sleep Out. We've held The Big Sleep Out for 5 years now and not only has it raised an incredible amount so we can help the homeless, it has also brought lots of local people together in unity and created a sense of community. It also raises awareness for homelessness and although it is not meant to represent what it feels like to be homeless, it gives us a taster of some of the harsh realities.
Covid-19 may be overtaking our news and our minds but homelessness still exists throughout this. Whilst we're staying in our warm and safe homes, with family/friends to keep us company, the homeless community are facing this without having a home where they can isolate or a support network to get them through. That is why we need you more than ever - to ensure we have the funds to provide our homeless community with a welcoming and safe place to stay and the support they need to get them through not only homelessness, but the other struggles in life too.
